Keeping in Touch
1980
Ending his message with a hearty GO BEARS!, Big Bill Hinchenberger, editor of www.brazilmax.com, wanted his fellow alums to know that he has launched a “Cal in Brazil” group on Cal Café. Bill attended a HAPPY HOUR (i.e., a bit of food and lots to drink) in Sao Paulo with alums of Cal, Texas, and Thunderbird (the wine?). Last seen by your class secretary in a restaurant in the San Gabriel Valley with mariachis in the background, Mike (Spike) Neal continues flying and dentisting, not usually at the same time, in Healdsburg. Jeff (The Gamer) Templin attended the Cal-Tennessee game in Knoxville and brought along some of his patented luck for the Bear faithful. Leo O’Farrell caught the spirit of Cal’s Bowl run and attended the Washington game in Memorial Stadium with his godson, Tomás (Cub) Johnson. Where are you, Joe Letteri, Lance Pruitt, and Jello Biafra?
It was father/son day at the BIG GAME 2006 for a number of alums of the Cal Class of 1980. Top Dog, Larry Blake’s, and Kip’s were in full swing. Big Leo O’Farrell, who received but another honor – a “Stampy” award for his super work for the Food Stamps Program in the City, brought his son Darnell. Mike “Spike” Neal brought Little Chuckie; Spike wanted to show his son the old frat house, but “big government” closed it down years ago for undisclosed violations. And your Class Secretary brought Tomas to his first BIG GAME. In November, Stevo Roscow and Cary Zeitlin wandered up to Davis to see the LITTLE BIG GAME between UC Davis and Sac State. It has been a long radio silence for most from of the Class of 1980. Please let us know what you are doing.

Many of us returned to campus last fall to celebrate our 25th Reunion during Homecoming Weekend. It was great fun seeing familiar faces, sharing memories, and catching up on our lives! Reunion Gift Committee Members Alicia Berberich, Dan Blatteis, Phil & Linda (Gammage) Dowley, Anne (Raby) Gates (co-chair), Barbara (Hollimon) Goodson, Lynda (Mackowski) Heaney, Tyler Hofinga (co-chair), Mark Kelsey, Lynn Lippstreu, Marc Litchman, Richard Leider, Kevin Lum, Joy (Franich) Maze, and Drew Planting, were instrumental in reaching out to classmates. Our class gift campaign was a great success, contributing close to $440,000 at press time (mid-December). This represents that largest single-year 20th Reunion campaign in Cal history. Thanks, everyone, and Go Bears!
