The Beverly Mullins Memorial Scholarship

The Beverly Mullins Memorial Scholarship was created to give financial assistance to leaders who are single re-entry student/parents. Up to $5,000 will be distributed each year to a selected undergraduate student who is attending, or will attend, UCB in the fall semester.

Beverly Jo Mullins '98
Beverly (1957-2000), attended UC Berkeley as a Re-entry student from 1993-1998. During her time at Berkeley she played an active role in the Re-entry Program as a work-study member of staff and was Vice President of the Re-entry Alumni Association. In her later years at Berkeley she became a staff member at the Haas School of Business.

Many transferring Re-entry students remember Beverly for her welcoming smile, one of the first they experienced on campus. Her smile became a symbol of the Re-entry Program and she touched many people with her warmth and caring. In her mentoring and counseling, Beverly had a special ability to connect with other students on a personal level. As a single mother with no outside financial support, Beverly also had the special ability to stay focused on her education, and her part-time work, while raising a family. Like many Re-entry students she found this very challenging, but it was critically important to her that her son, Jacob, see the value of a good education. She chose to show him by example and in May 1998, sixteen years after her first community college class, Beverly graduated from Berkeley with a Bachelors degree in Sociology, with honors.

Two years after her graduation, Beverly was diagnosed with a brain tumor and, after a 6-month struggle, she passed away peacefully in her sister's home. Just three weeks after her death, Beverly's greatest goal was accomplished when her son was accepted at four top universities. Jacob graduated from Yale in May, 2005.
