The Barbara Rosenthal Israel Scholarship Rewarding Journalistic Merit

Each year, the California Alumni Association in conjunction with the Cal Monthly, the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and The Daily Californian team up to reward one scholarship to an outstanding UC Berkeley undergraduate student in his or her sophomore, junior or senior year. The scholar is chosen for his or her commitment to the field of journalism. The award is based on the quality of the individual’s reporting, photography, design, illustrations, cartoons and/or editing. Special weight shall be given to students who have worked in an editorial capacity for at least one semester at The Daily Californian.
Eligibility Sophomore, Junior or Senior undergraduate student at UC Berkeley Published at least five articles/pieces or worked five shifts in a newsroom (copy, design, etc.)
Application A complete application should include each of the following: Application cover sheet Resume Personal essay on reasons for applying for the scholarship and pursuing journalism, and why individual deserves award (Maximum 500 words) Three to five clips of recently published work
Selection Process- Submit a completed application form and return it to The Alumni Scholarship Office, 1 Alumni House, Berkeley, CA 94720 no later than Friday September 12, 2008.
- Selection of the recipient will be made by a panel including Editor of the California Magazine, Dean of the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, General Manager of The Daily Californian and Scholarship Director for the California Alumni Association.
- The recipient will receive award notification by October 17th, 2008.
Award Amount $2000, with 1-2 scholarships awarded each year. Awards will be paid into Spring 2008 CARS account.
