The Leadership Award

Frequently Asked Questions

I have not heard anything regarding my interview or scholarship status. What should I do?
Phone interviews will be scheduled and conducted from May 16th - May 22nd. Every student will know their scholarship status by May 23rd. If you have not interviewed and do not receive an e-mail to schedule your phone interview by May 16th, please e-mail scholarships@alumni.berkeley.edu

When are scholarship applications due?

Online applications for incoming Cal students must be submitted by February 20, 2008 at 11:59 PM. No mailed, faxed or emailed applications will be accepted.

There are absolutely no exceptions to these rules.

I already applied for the Achievement Award Program. Can I apply for the Leadership Award as well?

Yes, however you need to fill out a separate application for the Leadership Award.

I get an error message when I go to the online application. What should I do?

Many people will be trying to access the web server so there may be problems. As they arise, we will try to resolve the issues as soon as possible. Our best advice is to not procrastinate and submit the application early. If you still experience problems, please be patient and try again later.

How do I submit my answers in plain-text format?

We require you to submit your answers in a plain-text format that has no additional style elements like bullets, tables, bold type, symbols, etc. For best results, save your document as a plain-text file. To do this:
  1. Open your document
  2. Select 'Save As...' from the 'File' menu.
  3. Select 'Plain Text' in the section 'Save as Type'.
***Consult your software's help menu or manual for more information on saving documents to different file types if necessary
  4. Open the plain-text file.
  5. Verify your plain-text file is readable and does NOT contain any unusual characters. Many times apostrophes and commas are converted to other characters.
  6. Copy and paste the text into the submission field in the online application.

How do I know if my application was received?

When you click 'Submit' you will see a page that says:
Thank you!

Your information has been received.

You will then receive a confirmation email within 72 hours. If you do not receive a confirmation email within 72 hours, please contact the Alumni Scholarship Office immediately. Please plan accordingly; if you apply less than 72 hours before the application deadline, we may not be able to send you a confirmation email before the deadline passes. Once the deadline has passed, we will periodically send updates to all applicants.

So I'm supposed to apply without already knowing whether I have been accepted to Cal?

Yes. Although this may seem inconvenient, the reason that we set the application deadline before admissions decisions come out is so that we can let freshmen applicants know the results of their applications before the Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) is due. Freshmen applicants will be informed of the final scholarship decisions no later than My 23rd, 2008. Advanced Standing Transfer Students will receive a scholarship status in August 2008.

What's my UC Application ID number?

Your UC Application ID is a 7-digit number that uniquely identifies you within the California UC applicant system.
Note: UC Berkeley Admissions cannot provide UC Application ID numbers.

To find your UC Application ID:
  1. Your PATHWAYS receipt.
If you submitted your application via PATHWAYS, you should have seen a screen displaying this information.

  2. The letter you received acknowledging receipt of your application.

  3. Contact the University of California Admissions Processing center (UCAP):
    (800) 523-2048 (In California)
    (925) 808-2181 (Out of California)
    --Ask for UC Admissions Processing.

    Deaf and Hearing Impaired Callers:
    TDD (925) 521-9280

    Email: ucinfo@ucapplication.net

What should I write my essay about?

We intentionally made the essay topic very broad. We want you to be creative and convey to us in 500 words how you are a leader, however you choose to. That may mean writing about one single activity or touching on four different activities. It is totally up to you!

Also, please note that those reviewing your application will not have access to your UC application. This means that if you want to use an essay similar to the one you used for your UC application, you are welcome to as long as this is applicable to the topic.

Can I apply if I am not currently in the United States?

In order to be eligible for the scholarship, US freshmen applicants must be in the United States from April 1-24, 2008. We are also accepting applicants from students near London and Hong Kong, but you may be asked to travel to these locations for an interview during the same timeframe. There are no exceptions to this rule. You may be called by one of our local Cal alumni scholarship representatives (who are conveniently located across the country for your interviewing pleasure) and asked to come to an in-person interview. No student will receive the scholarship without first being interviewed. At this time we have only 2 scholarship districts outside of the U.S. and therefore cannot consider applications from students living outside of the country or London or Hong Kong. Transfer applicants must be available for an interview over the summer in LA, Orange County or Sacramento or for an on-campus interview in September.

Should I include letters of recomendation?

No. You should not include anything else in your application packet besides those materials that we specifically ask for in the application. That means no letters of recommendation, no pictures of your report card, no eleventh-place ribbons, etc.

What's the next step after I submit my application?

Be patient. The scholarship office will work night and day to sort all the applications we receive and get them to local scholarship districts across the country! If you are a freshman and if, on March 30, you find out that you were accepted to Cal, you may receive a phone call sometime between April 1-24 from your local scholarship district chair inviting you to an interview. There is no need to contact our office during this time as we already have your contact information and will get in touch with you if need be. Please note that not all applicants are invited to an interview. Transfer applicants will be notified in mid-June if they have advanced to the Finalist round of contention, during which the next stage will be an interview.

When will I know whether or not I have received the Alumni Scholarship?

You will be contacted during the month of July to let you know if you've advanced to the finalist round of contention for the Leadership Award. Interviews will take place in September.

Freshmen applicants will absolutely know by April 25. We set this date so that you know the results of your scholarship application before the May SIR deadline. We feel it is important to know whether you will be receiving this financial help before you make your college decision. However, transfer applicants will not know the final results of their application until September, as we will not finish interviews until then.

What other benefits are available to Alumni Scholars besides the scholarship money?

In addition to the monetary side of the scholarship, Alumni Scholars receive a number of other great benefits. You will receive an Alumni Scholarship membership card which will save you 20% on all purchases at the Cal student store, exluding textbooks, and will also save you $375 on a Kaplan test preparation course.

You will also be immediately plugged into the CAA Student Service resources. As an alumni scholar, we will immediately give you opportunities to interact with the leaders of the Cal campus. You will be the first to hear about upcoming events such as career networking, mentorship and leadership development opportunities.

Is the scholarship renewable?

Yes. The scholarship is renewable for up to a total of 5 years. However, you are required to submit a renewal application each year. Renewal is a competitive process and you are not guaranteed the scholarship every year. We want to make sure that you continue to develop your leadership qualities while at Cal.
