Executive Director Harrison Cheng harryyc@pacbell.net
Outreach Committee Senior Director: Yuri Matusov ymatusov@berkeley.edu
This semester, the Outreach Committee is expanding to include a number of new programs and ideas, as well as developing further those that have been successful in the past. As the largest committee in ASA, we welcome new participation and have numerous avenues for advancement in the organization. We look for people who are sociable, hard-working, balanced, and willing to take on a leadership role in one of the largest and best-known organizations on the Berkeley campus. A sample of the events that we have planned for this semester include high school visits and presentations about Cal, mentorship and instruction in the arts at local elementary and junior high schools, a shadow day for high school students, and a number of other activities. We are also looking to increase the size and scope of our popular Overnight Stay Program (OSP). In order to make all of this happen, we need your help! Please come to our next meeting on Thursday, September 6 at 7pm in Alumni House. If you can't make it but are still interested, please let us know. This time is tentative and likely to change in the future. If you have any questions, please ask Yuri, Nicole, Tyler, Brighitte, or Whitney.
Director, High School Affairs: Whitney Steininger wsteininger@berkeley.edu
Director, Overnight Stay Program (OSP): Tyler Le tylerle@berkeley.edu
The Outreach Department works to market Cal to high school students through their High School Outreach, Overnight Stay Programs, and Berkeley Experience Programs. High School Outreach gives presentations at California high schools and college fairs providing students with a better understanding of the college experience and Cal admissions process. Sign up for an opportunity to be a part of the planning of our programs and help recruit future Bears by sharing your exciting experiences at Cal.
Director, Elementary Affairs: Nicole Krup nkrup@berkeley.edu
The Elementary and Junior High Affairs committee is a division of Outreach focused on offering art instruction to underpriviledged students in local elementary and junior high schools. As the program is in its first year, ASA is looking for Alumni Scholars and friends who are passionate about the painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, dance, vocal and instrumental music, and drama to implement or assist in one hour a week of either off-campus or on-campus instruction. Scholars need not be majoring in the humanities, but should have a knowledge of the medium and the energy to share the joys of that art with younger students.
Director, I Can at Cal (ICC): Brighitte Preciado bspreciado@berkeley.edu
As part of the Outreach committee, "I Can at Cal" (ICC) aims to promote higher education goals for low income and minority groups. The fall usually consists of college presentations and personal statement workshops. In the spring, we host the ICC Retreat during which we invite 20 HS Sophomores and Juniors to CAL for the weekend and provide the ultimate college experience including dorm life, dining commons and sitting in on lectures. We give students from disadvantaged backgrounds an opportunity to experience what they thought was only a dream and make them realize it's a possibility. GO BEARS!
Special Events Committee Director: Matt Nevins mnevins@berkeley.edu
The Special Events Committee is in charge of planning all social gatherings and receptions for ASA, including the banquet that you are currently enjoying! We will also plan the second annual ASA Winter Formal dance party to celebrate the end of the semester this December. Movie nights, Relay for Life, and other community development projects fall under the Special Events Committee. If you like event planning, this committee is for you! So bring your ideas to meetings, get ready to meet lots of awesome people, and see why Special Events is a socially enjoyable committee in ASA. GO BEARS!
Alumni Relations Committee Director: Jazzi Junge jazzij@berkeley.edu
The Alumni Relations Committee is centered on building relations between Cal alumni and current Cal students. Possible programs include mentorships and alumni and student mixers. Also, the Alumni Relations Committee heps with such events as the Alumni Thank-a-Thon in which students call alumni who have donated to the California Alumni Association. The Alumni Relations Committee is a great committee to join if you are interested in networking with other students and alumni.
Communications Committee Director: Jessica Kwong jessicakwong@berkeley.edu
Have a passion for writing, photography, or graphic design? Are you tech savvy, or just plain like the idea of being on top of past and future ASA events? If youve answered any of the above with even a remote yes, then the Communications Committee suits you! Whether its putting together the newsletter and yearbook, updating the website, or contacting local businesses to get advertisements and score more member benefits, the Communications Committee is a creative way to connect with fellow ASA members.
Finance Committee Director: Sarah Dryden scdryden@berkeley.edu
The Finance Committee oversees all aspects of budgeting and expenses for the Alumni Scholarship Association, as well as coordinating fundraisers such as the Finals Survival Kits. As a committee, we will brainstorm and plan our fundraisers as well as assessing overall ASA cash flow together on a bi-weekly basis. Join Finance Committee if you have an interest in learning how we fund a major student organization, or in being a part of projects like the Finals Survival Kits!
