Road Trip Nation Webcasts

Student teams from Emory University, San Jose State University, and Concordia University travel from coast to coast interviewing a diverse group of interesting leaders in this exclusive PBS online series. Check out 10 of the episodes as webcasts:

Episode 1

Interviews with:
  • Social activist Jan Robinson Flint
  • Actor Joshua Jackson

    Synopsis
    The San Jose team travels to LA to interview social activist, Jan Robinson Flint, who tells of growing up in Chicago during a time of great social change and how this helped her discover her passion. They then interview actor Joshua Jackson. Jackson offers advice about following passions, taking chances, and testing character in order to feel a greater sense of accomplishment.



    Episode 2

    Interviews with
  • Barron Wolman, photographer
  • Mike Henry, poetry slam artist
  • Bev Kearney, track and field coach

    Synopsis
    In New Mexico, the San Jose team interviews Baron Wolman, the first photographer for Rolling Stone magazine. He went to spy school during the Vietnam War to avoid the draft. In Austin, TX they interview Mike Henry, poetry slam artist, and Bev Kearney, head track and field coach at UT Austin.






    Episode 3

    Interviews with:
  • Bennie Klain, documentary filmmaker
  • Irvin Mayfiel, jazz musician
  • EJim Pat, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity

    Synopsis
    At the Grand Canyon, the San Jose team unexpectedly books an interview with a documentary filmmaker,Bennie Klain. Then they head to New Orleans to interview jazz musician Irvin Mayfield. The team then heads across the bridge to the Ninth Ward, where they talk with Jim Pate, the executive director of Habitat for Humanity, and then help build houses.




    Episode 4

    Interviews with:
  • Beverly Robertson, Executive Director of the national Civil Rights Museum
  • Marshawn Evans, an attorney and CEO
  • Activist Chairman Fred Hampton Jr.

    Synopsis
    The San Jose team heads to Memphis to speak with Beverly Robertson, executive director of the national Civil Rights Museum. In St Louis, they interview Marshawn Evans, an attorney and CEO, and former contestant on The Apprentice. They interview activist Chairman Fred Hampton Jr, and then stop in Washington DC where they talk with artist Cheryl Foster.




    Episode 5

    Interviews with:
  • Andrew Lins, a conservation preserver
  • Billy King, team President of the Philadelphia 76ers
  • "Cousin" Jeff Johnson, a social and political activist

    Synopsis
    In Philadelphia, the team climbs to the top of the clock tower at city hall to meet Andrew Lins, a conservation preserver working on restoring the Liberty Bell. Next up is an interview with Billy King, team president of the Philadelphia 76ers. After traveling to New York, they interview “Cousin” Jeff Johnson, a social and political activist with his own show on BET.




    Episode 6

    Interviews with:
  • Kate White, Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan
  • Wendy Williams of the Wendy Williams Experience


    Synopsis
    In New York, the team interviews Kate White, Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan, and Wendy Williams of the Wendy Williams Experience. At the end of the trip, Abel, Kisura and Cairo go home with advice to make changes in their lives to get where they want, no matter how terrifying it may seem.





    Episode 7

    Interviews with:
  • Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist.org
  • Rex Grignon, head of character animation for Dreamworks


    Synopsis
    The Emory team gets ready to hit the road! Their first stop is in San Francisco where they interview Craig Newmark, the founder of craigslist.org, and then on to Dreamworks for a fun interview with Rex Grignon, the head of character animation.







    Episode 8

    Interviews with:
  • Walter Murch, film editor and Academy Award winner
  • David Margulies, founder of High Sierra Musical Festival
  • Jake Shimabukuro, ukele virtuoso


    Synopsis
    In Bolinas, CA, the Emory team gets a bit lost on their way to film editor and Academy Award winner Walter Murch’s house. Then it’s off to Quincy, CA for the High Sierra Music Festival where they interview founder David Margulies and ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro. They then head north to Seattle to interview glassblower William Morris.




    Episode 9

    Interviews with:
  • Whit Alexander, co-founder of board game Cranium
  • Steve Schankman, founder of Contemporary Productions
  • Christen Carter, Busy Beaver Button Company
  • Katrina Markoff, founder of Vosges Haut-Chocolate

    Synopsis
    In Seattle, the team interviews Whit Alexander, the co-founder of the board game Cranium. Later in St Louis, they interview Steve Schankman, the founder of Contemporary Productions. The next stop is Chicago and the Busy Beaver Button Co. to interview founder Christen Carter. They also interview Katrina Markoff, founder of Vosges Haut-Chocolate.




    Episode 10

    Interviews with:
  • Dean Kamen, inventor and founder of DEKA Research and Development
  • Bert and John Jacobs, founders of the clothing company "Life is Good"
  • Dave McGillivray, Boston Marathon runner

    Synopsis
    En route to Manchester, New Hampshire, the team sits down with Dean Kamen, an inventor and founder of DEKA Research and Development. Next it’s off to Boston to interview Bert and John Jacobs, founders of the clothing company Life is Good. In Boston they interview Dave McGillivray, a Boston Marathon runner who, in 1978, ran across the entire United States.
