Dr. Thomas Soss
On May 5, 1945, Dr. Thomas Soss ’39 helped liberate the Mauthausen concentration camp in Germany. But his division, part of the 26th Infantry, never received recognition from the Army for its brave deeds—until photos taken by him and fellow battalion surgeon Robert Burton were discovered in 2002 at Burton’s home following his death. The two doctors, who participated in many World War II confrontations, were finally honored in a ceremony at Washington, D.C.’s Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Casey Tefertiller Journalist Casey Tefertiller ’75 chronicles the mental elements that can lead to greater success in baseball and in life in his latest book, Mental Toughness: A Champion’s State of Mind. The book has a foreword by Tony La Russa, the former A’s manager who is now manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. Baseball stars such as Dusty Baker, Mark McGwire, Gary Carter, Rich Harden, and Don Sutton have been effusive in their praise.
The book was co-authored by fellow 1988 College World Series baseball teammate John Kuehl, who has played professionally with the A’s and the San Diego Padres, and John’s father Karl, who is a special adviser to the Cleveland Indians. Tefertiller has covered baseball at all levels for the San Francisco Examiner. A previous book, Wyatt Earp: The Life Behind the Legend, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
Kevin Stone
Kevin Stone, ’93 and M.S. ’95, is a co-founder and senior product director at BeVocal, which provides outsourced speech recognition solutions to automate calls for contact centers. For the past two years, he’s also helped launch a new public charter school in San Francisco. KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) San Francisco Bay Academy is now finishing its second academic year. The school’s goal is to provide college preparatory education for underrepresented kids. “Right now, over 84 percent of our kids are on the free-or reduced-lunch program, which is the highest among the neighboring schools,” says Kevin, who is president of the school’s board of directors. “Despite that, our reading scores rose 8 percent in just one year—the highest among comparable San Francisco schools.” In recognition of KIPP’s achievements, the school board unanimously voted to renew its charter for five years. Kevin also serves on education-related community boards in Mountain View.
