| | Under the theme “A Tradition Reborn With New Glory,” this year’s Charter Banquet offered a new venue, new menu, and a program that started with a comic live video feed of hosts Warren Hellman Jr. and Darek DeFreece frantically trying to rouse a heavily snoozing Oski. Over 1,000 members of Cal’s extended family celebrated Cal’s 137th birthday, toasting, dining, and dancing the night away at Fort Mason’s Herbst Pavilion, luminously decorated for the occasion. This year’s Gala also served as the anchor event for Chancellor Robert Birgeneau’s inauguration.
A number of distinguished alumni were honored for their contributions to society, including civic leader Dr. Lee Patrick Brown, the 2004 Alumnus of the Year, and NASA engineer and Mars robotic rovers team leader Wayne Lee, the first recipient of the Mark Bingham Award. Achievement Awards were presented to Arabella Martinez, founder of Oakland’s Unity Council; Oren Jacob, Pixar Studio’s technical director for Finding Nemo; and Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
