HIGH STEPPERS: The 1954 Cal Band Executive Committee (left to right: student director Tom Miller, drum major Bill Isbell, director emeritus Bob Briggs, current director Bob Calonico, senior manager Bill Colescott, and secretary Roger Hammer) was recognized at Cal’s opening football game this season. Fifty years ago, the Band introduced its new “high-stepping style” and put on the white spats, white gloves, and white vests against the dark uniforms and blue and gold capes so recognizable to Cal fans the past half century.
LURLINE PARKER LEWIS ’26 has gathered some extraordinary experiences over the past century. “I remember going to the Panama International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915,” she said at her 100th birthday in August, “and a special exhibit at the telephone building where we could listen and talk to somebody in New York. That was brand new.” A long-time resident of Oakland and an art major at Cal, Lurline now lives in Rossmoor with her second husband; she also has two daughters, eight grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. Concerning her own longevity, Lurline says, “I have awfully good genes, and I enjoy a glass of red wine with dinner. But I think you’ve got to keep active—stay interested in people and in what’s going on in the world.” —Wilma “Buff” Silveria ’49
GOOD LUCK BEAR: Grizzly Bear, by sculptor and former art faculty member Raymond Puccinelli, presented to the University in 1955, sits amidst fall colors on the bank of Strawberry Creek, just across from the Cal Band offices. On football game days, members of the Cal Band give a traditional good-luck rub to the bear’s nose. Good luck rubbed back this season.
