 Old bag: On campus for his 50th class reunion, Allen Schmidt ’53 wears the wrong-colored shirt but carries the right book bag from back in the day. Born in Venice, Schmidt came to Cal on the G.I. Bill in 1950, when Berkeley was “a neat Joe College town.” He was “a hasher” at a sorority house, went out for crew, and generally had his world opened up. “I just loved it.” Allen earned his M.D. (at USC), then practiced at Kaiser, mostly in San Rafael, retiring 14 years ago.
