Light fantastic In November, the Campanile started to look distinctly blue around the gills--and we mean that in the best possible way. “We’re turning the campus blue and gold,” says Jon Locascio, chairman of the Rally Committee, which negotiated a maze of technical issues and bureaucratic restrictions to light the famed campus tower, along with Sather Gate and the Big C, in a smart new color palette for Big Game Week.
Ice-cold Bears
These three Bears have found an interesting way to keep cool: Reese Milner ’70, Frank Sauer ’87, and John Hotchkis ’54 (above) are members of the St. Moritz Tobogganing Club in Switzerland, where each year they brave the elements--fear and gravity--to careen down the famed Cresta Run at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour. The ice track drops 514 feet in just three quarters of a mile, so it should come as no surprise that the photo gallery at the club’s website (cresta-run.com) features a series of shots of some spectacular wipe-outs and smiling tobogganers availing themselves of the services at the local hospital.
Try to see it my way
William “Lefty” Fontenrose ’48 has been practicing calligraphy for 40 years, and we think he’s gotten pretty good at it. Lefty, who chose Cal over the California College of Arts and Crafts because “they didn’t have a sports program,” makes a hobby of creating ambigrams--texts with 180-degree symmetry. Confused? It all depends on how you look at it.

Get the red out In the continuing quest to banish all things red, the Coca-Cola company has replaced the offensively colored red and white logos on their campus vending machines with something a little more tasteful. Now that’s refreshing!
