Alumnus of the Year Bill Bagley '49 held the spotlight at the 135th Charter Banquet, which was celebrated in San Francisco on March 7. Profiled in last December's California Monthly, Bagley presided over the event with typical good humor. In a short film, friends and colleagues, including former California Governor George Deukmajian and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, mixed praise for Bagley's achievements with gentle political jibes: "Tonight, when you get the award," the mayor said to the lifelong moderate Republican, 'I know you'll come clean and admit you're a closet Democrat." In his award acceptance address, Bagley retorted, "We all come out of the closet in San Francisco," but stopped short of switching party allegiance.
The event also honored a dozen other alumni award winners for 2002. The first of three Excellence in Achievement Awards recognized inventor and entrepreneur Bruce Del Mar '37, who has created more than 35 patented devices and processes in fields as diverse as aerospace engineering, medical instrumentation, and compact disk manufacturing. Also honored was Peter Raven '57, director of the Missouri Botanical Garden and a world-renowned advocate of biodiversity and ecological sustainability, and Heidi Kuhn '79, founder of Roots of Peace, an organization working to clear landmines from war-torn areas around the world.
Ronald '56 and Catharine Henderson '57 were honored with the Excellence in Service Award. The Hendersons have represented Cal in San Diego for more than four decades as hosts of student outreach events, officers in the North County San Diego alumni club, and scholarship interviewers. Also receiving Service Awards were former CAA director Karen Dunn '53, a leader in the Inland C's alumni club, and driving force in scholarship fundraising efforts, and Irene Shinoda Thornton '72. A member of Oski Dolls as a student, since graduation Thornton has served on the CAA Board of Directors, volunteered in countless Orange County college nights and student receptions, and worked on the Class of '72 reunion committee.
Michael Foulkes '90 received the Bradford S. King Award for his volunteer service on CAA's Young Alumni Council, Board of Directors, and Student/Alumni Mentorship Program. Foulkes also serves as an adviser to the Berkeley Model U.N. and Cal in Sacramento programs. Gina Yue Han '98 was recognized as the Distinguished Mentor of the Year.
Outstanding Club Award honors went to UC GALA, one of the few alumni clubs in the country serving lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered alumni, and the Cal Band Alumni Association, which helps preserve Band traditions, encourages new student leaders, and fills in for current Band members as needed.
The Robert Gordon and Ida W. Sproul Awards, honoring two juniors for academic achievement and service in the student community, were presented to Bryant Yang and Christina Hioureas. Yang has been active with the Student Advocate Office and the City of Berkeley's Police Review Commission. Hioureas is founder and president of the Berkeley chapter of the National Organization for Women and has developed an art therapy course for survivors of domestic violence.
